New solar radiation measurement station

Sample text. This article was written to show how the section looks. It is not indexed by search engines.

A solar radiation measurement station has come into operation. It continuously records global irradiance, the diffuse component and the ultraviolet index, with one-minute resolution.

Why it matters

Sizing a solar installation requires long series measured on site, not satellite estimates. Global databases work reasonably well over flat, homogeneous terrain, but they go wrong in areas of complex topography such as the southern Peruvian highlands, and that error carries straight through to the system design.

The station will make it possible to:

  • Build our own reference series for Arequipa.
  • Validate solar resource models against measured data.
  • Track the ultraviolet index, which at altitude reaches high values for much of the year.

The data will be available for thesis work and research projects on request to the laboratory.
